The Draft
For the part nobody sees.
The first pass is ugly on purpose. This collection is for the stretch of a book where the only measure of progress is that the page is longer than it was yesterday. Plain garments, no slogans that would embarrass you in a coffee shop, cut for sitting still for four hours.

The second pass is where the book actually happens.
Named for the work of cutting. Marks, proofreading notation, the vocabulary of editors — used the way a printer would use it, not the way a novelty store would. For writers who know that a manuscript is finished when it stops bleeding.

Self-publishers, small-press founders, people who write the book and then format it, sell it, and ship it. Cover design, distribution, royalties, the unglamorous logistics of running a one-person publishing house.
